1.  What is your opinion of Selig sparing Eva's life, while at the same time leading her parents to their certain death?

2.  In the course of the novel, do you think that Selig succeeds in achieving atonement despite his former history as a Hitler Youth and German soldier?

3.  What feelings did the scenes, episodes, and depictions of life in the concentration camp evoke in you?

4.  Do you believe that Selig's marriage to Frieda was based on anything more than exploitation? Discuss the reasons for your position.

5.  Discuss Mathew's disclosure of his secret to his father in view of the threat it poses to Nathan's lineage.

6.  How do you regard the attraction and relationship between Selig and Eva, based on your personal values? Do you find the final resolution of their relationship satisfying?
